Apple today announced its acquisition of Texture, a digital magazine subscription service. Cupertino is acquiring the makers of Texture, Next Issue Media, and all of its employees will be joining Apple going forward. Texture’s apps for iOS, Android, and Windows 10/8 (yes) will continue to work — at least for the time being.

Neither Apple nor Texture is disclosing the exact amount of the deal, or what Apple plans to do with Next Issue Media’s talent. The most obvious outcome of this acquisition would likely involve Texture getting integrated into Apple News, allowing users of Apple News to access its collection of over 200 magazines. It’s not clear if Apple will charge users to access these magazines, as Texture currently charges $9.99 a month for the service.

“We’re excited Texture will join Apple, along with an impressive catalog of magazines from many of the world’s leading publishers. We are committed to quality journalism from trusted sources and allowing magazines to keep producing beautifully designed and engaging stories for users,” said Apple’s Eddy Cue, announcing the acquisition. Apple being Apple is staying quite tight-lipped about its plans here, so we’ll just have to wait to see where this goes.
