A store in Vietnam called D Store Mobile has apparently been the source of many of the
Pixel 4 XL leaks
that we’ve passed along recently. While
telling The Verge that the device is not a fake, the retailer did admit that it is a “test model” and not the final version of the
phone that is expected to be introduced on October 15th. The store also sent to The Verge a number of new pictures of the device dressed in White.
A couple of the photos revealed specs for the unit’s cameras, showing that the rear 12.2MP camera on both models will have a wider f/1.73 aperture as opposed to the f/1.8 aperture on the
Pixel 3. This means that more light can enter through the lens. And the images also reveal that the front-facing dual-cameras weigh in at 8.1MP (f/2.0) and .3MP (f/2.2) with the latter being a possible Time of Flight depth sensor. There should be two other sensors on the rear camera module, one in back of a 16MP Telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom, and a spectral sensor. This picks up images that the human eye normally cannot see such as X-rays, infrared beams and ultraviolet light.

Based on the recent leaks, the Pixel 4 XL will carry a 6.23-inch AMOLED display with a 1440 x 3040 QHD+ resolution for an aspect ratio of 19:9. The screen will refresh at a 90Hz rate which should result in buttery smooth scrolling and improved animations (including those on mobile games). The device will be powered by the Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform, not the 855+. Using the overclocked version of Qualcomm’s current flagship SoC would have seemed like the right thing to do considering it brings a performance boost for the Adreno 640 GPU. All indications are that the Pixel 4 XL will be equipped with 6GB of memory and 64GB/128GB of storage. A 3700mAh battery will keep the lights on and Android 10 will be pre-installed.
The
Pixel 4 is expected to ship with a 5.7-inch AMOLED display (also with a 90Hz refresh rate) featuring a 1080 x 2280 FHD+ and an aspect ratio of 19:9. This model will carry the 12.2MP Primary camera and the 16MP Telephoto lens on the back and will be equipped with a 2800mAh battery.

Both the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL
will introduce Motion Sense which will allow users to control certain aspects of the phone through the use of hand gestures. These gestures will be picked up by Google’s radar-based Soli chip located in the Pixel’s forehead and can be used to skip songs, quiet alarms, decline calls, activate the screen, display notifications and more. It does look as though the
Motion Sense feature can be disabled by the user if he or she so desires. Google is also taking Face unlock to the next level by making it a secure technology with 3D mapping similar to Face ID on the iPhone. Either the new Pixel models will have an in-display fingerprint scanner and Face unlock, or Google is betting solely on the latter just like Apple has done so far.
Google is looking to take the Pixel line to the next tier in order to compete with Apple and Samsung but on a much smaller scale. In 2018, Google shipped 4.7 million Pixels (70% were delivered to the U.S.)
and plans on doubling production this year to 8 million to 10 million units. The Pixel brand has really taken off in the states, but much of that increase was due to the launch of the mid-range
Pixel 3a and
Pixel 3a XL earlier this year. This allowed consumers to obtain a phone with one of the best (if not the best) photography systems in the world at a much lower price. Assuming that the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL are priced at $799 and $899 respectively, Google’s job will be to present these as premium handsets available at a lower price than the
Galaxy Note 10 series and iPhone 11 Pro models.
