OnePlus is giving us our first look at the company’s 5G handset at MWC 2019. It showed off its 5G phone for the first time ever, and unlike most other OEMs, the company’s 5G phone is still very much in the prototype stage.

OnePlus demoed its 5G phone at MWC, showing off games like Ace Combat 7 running on a 5G network. The company also had demo units for the device, but it was enclosed in prototype casing and encased within a glass box.

The company’s CEO Pete Lau told USA Today in an interview earlier that the company is planning to first launch the device in the United Kingdom and Finland. The device will be available from UK’s EE network and Finland’s Elisa network. It is not, however, planning to launch this particular device in the United States.

The device is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 platform, coming with the Snapdragon 855 processor and the X50 5G modem. It does not have an official name yet, but it will likely be called the OnePlus 7. And even though it isn’t launching the new 5G phone in the United States, the company has future plans for 5G in the United States. Lau even teased a potential T-Mobile partnership for the future.

The company will also be launching a 4G LTE variant of the device to work in the United States, with Lau stating that there could be variations in the chipset powering the device.

So yes, this is basically OnePlus letting everyone know that the company — like everyone else — is working on a 5G product. It is a little behind the big boys, but it is getting there.
