The Sams Report: Is Windows 10 S a Failure?

Windows 10 S or S mode is interesting because it doesn’t really make any sense as there seems no tangible benefits.
So a consumer gets Windows 10 S on a machine. Mostly users don’t “choose” Windows it’s just on their PC. its free from their perspective. They don’t pay extra. They may not even notice for a while. However, if they want to install Chrome, a printer driver or some other thing they will discover that it’s “limited”. They then get the idea there is a version of Windows that doesn’t work like Windows they used to have.
Who is going to choose Windows S? If you are told you can have a version of Windows that locks you into only the Microsoft Store then who will voluntarily choose that? Even if they can live with Windows S the idea of buying into fenced world where, if they want to download something from the web, they can’t is a tough sell.
So speed, security, battery life are enhanced. If people are choosing on those criteria then it actually puts the Chromebook on the horizon. Creating a Chromebook like Windows might just remove the reason to even want to have Windows.
Just as a basic selling point what is the benefit of S mode? Until anyone understands it then it’s DOA.
